The Arcade Fire—Funeral (released 2004)
Reasons to love: “Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)”, “Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)”, “Rebellion (Lies)”
Do I really need to say anything? I mean really? Obviously a rhetorical question. But if you haven’t heard of this band (especially in like the past month) then what the fuck is wrong with you? Thing is, Arcade Fire is more than that band whose song makes all these “Where The Wild Things Are” trailers and commercials what they are (I don’t know about you but that sends chills down my spine every time).
For me “Funeral” was an album that I started college with. It came out virtually the same month I started college, and though it took about a month after it was out for me to hear I still loved it. I pestered people I knew about it asking them, “have you listened to Arcade Fire yet?” Almost every other day. One person in particular actually got annoyed with it but later thanked me. I’ve seen them in concert twice. Once in 2005 at Lollapalooza (amazing) and once in 2007 when they were on tour with LCD Soundsytem (which is my favorite concert of all time…sorry Explosions). There are so many things about “Funeral” that is blows my mind.
Confession: I’m not that big of a fan of “Crown of Love”. Ok, ow, I deserved that but out of all the songs on this album it is the one I generally skip. Doesn’t mean I don’t love it—because I do!—it’s just that something about the placing feels off to me maybe it should switch places with “Une Année Sans Lumière”. Whatever. Most importantly “Tunnels” is probably my favorite opening track ever. It is just as beautiful as any piece of art I have ever seen or any pretty person I have ever looked at. And when you open and album with something like this it is readily apparent that you are in for a ride. Now take yourself back to 2004 when this first came out. I know the band had already had an EP under their belt but that only hinted at how hight they were about to climb. At that time this was such a groundbreaking album. It felt like millions of sounds were coming out of each track. It wasn’t some guy making music with an acoustic guitar, not a few guys making sounds with household objects. Just a group of people and Napoleon Dynamite playing all kinds of different instruments and blasting your ears into some kind of sonic Valhalla. Everything about this album is epic. Everything about it is rich and beautiful and wonderful. It makes your eyes and ears go wide with wonder. It blows my mind and melts my heart.
What he said. Except I’d probably make it #1.
